Doctoral Internship I

Course Description

This course serves as an opportunity for students to gain direct professional counseling experience (mandatory) and experience in at least one of the following areas: 1) teaching, 2) research and scholarship, and 3) leadership and advocacy. The course involves application of counseling and consultation theories and techniques. Therefore, students are expected to develop advanced skills and greater insight and depth of understanding of their evolving counseling theories through direct counseling, clinical supervision, classroom interaction, and professional reading. Experience includes individual and group clinical supervision of counseling sessions, case presentations, and reviews of counseling sessions. Additionally, demonstrated experience in either teaching, research/scholarship or leadership and advocacy during the semester affords students exposure to multiple areas of counselor education. Professional counseling experience must consist of a minimum of 20 direct hours and a minimum of 30 indirect hours. Additionally, it is required that you complete a minimum of 150 hours of experience in 1) teaching, 2) research and scholarship, or 3) leadership and advocacy according to your professional interests and goals during Internship I.
