Reliability Methods in Engineering Design

Course Description

Theory and applications of probabilistic methods in the analysis and synthesis of engineering systems. Review of basic probability concepts, random variables and distributions and uncertainty quantification and propagation. First-order, second-order and advanced mean value reliability methods. Monte Carlo simulation, variance reduction techniques, sensitivity analysis and reliability-based design optimization. Implementation of probabilistic methods using Excel and Matlab. Formerly ME 586. Offered winter.
